Latest technology, empathic care leads to proper diagnosis and treatment for patient

Nancy Vera, LVN, Care Manager at Homestead Home Care, is passionate about taking care of people and empowering them to make the right choices for their health care needs. So when her daughter, Heather Vannoy, was scheduled for surgery in December to remove multiple lumps in her breast, Nancy spoke up.“I said ‘Oh, no!’ and sent her to Dr. Chou,” says Nancy, recounting how she encouraged her daughter to see Dr. Jui-Lien “Lillian” Chou and The Breast Center at Wellness Lubbock before opting for surgery.Nancy, who had attended an event for breast cancer survivors last year at Wellness Lubbock, had come to Dr. Chou for her annual breast cancer screening and knew she could trust the staff with her daughter’s care needs as well.“I was so impressed with the facility and the technology available here at Dr. Chou’s,” explains Nancy. “I didn’t want Heather to have the surgery until we knew exactly what was going on. I knew we would get all the answers we needed right here.”A resident of Odessa, Heather had discussed with her hometown physician the soreness in her breast. Heather, who had a hysterectomy at age 29 because of endometriosis, has been on hormone therapy for years. She had developed lumps in her breast and had some nipple discharge in addition to the soreness.In December, after a referral to a surgeon and an ultrasound, but no biopsy or other tests, Heather was scheduled for surgery to remove several lumps. To Nancy, the sequence of events didn’t ring true, so she recommended Heather see Dr. Chou before going through with any invasive procedures.“I felt good in my spirit when I came here,” says Heather of her visit to The Breast Center at Wellness Lubbock in early January. “With the other doctor, I didn’t know what I was dealing with; it was frustrating and scary. But with Dr. Chou, she went through everything step-by-step and there was never a lack of communication.”Following a complete examination, including a digital mammogram and dedicated Aurora breast MRI, Heather heard the good news – the lumps in her breast were benign and there were no solid lesions or areas suspicious for breast cancer, meaning there was no reason to have a biopsy or surgery.“It was such a relief,” says Heather. “There was definitely a lot of texting and messages to family that day to share the news!”For Heather, there is no doubt in her mind that meeting Dr. Chou saved h
